What is patch Tuesday?

Patch Tuesday is the day when Microsoft releases security updates for your computer that can help fix flaws and other vulnerabilities.

Patch Tuesday is normally on the second Tuesday of each month, and normally released around 5-6pm GMT, although sometimes updates might be released before or after Patch Tuesday, if required.

However, if you’re using Microsoft Security Essentials, updates happen on a daily basis.

Installing Windows updates is important to keep your computer safe, secure, and free from any currently detected vulnerabilities to viruses, spyware, malware and other malicious software.

How to make sure all your updates are installed on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 and 8:

Windows XP

To run Windows Update, click on Start which is normally at the bottom right; go to All Programs and the list of programs; look for and left-click on ‘Windows Updates’.

Once the web page has loaded you will see the options ‘Express’ and ‘Custom’. Click ‘Custom’.

It will now check to see if there are any updates. Once it has checked for available updates, it will display them as:

  • High Priority
  • Software Optional
  • Hardware Optional

Click each section and tick the check boxes to install the updates, if they are not ticked. Once you’ve selected the updates, click on Install Updates at the top left. You then need to click Install Updates again in the central window.

The updates will now start to download and install. This may take a while.

Once the updates have been installed you will need to restart your computer.
